The European Commission’s Horizon Europe Work Programme for 2023-2024 has allocated 188.6 million EUR to support sustainable energy projects within Cluster 5. This cluster covers the areas of Climate, Energy and Mobility, and as such is a vital component of the EU’s research and innovation strategy focused on addressing climate change by enhancing energy systems, transport and industrial competitiveness.

Open calls under Horizon Europe Cluster 5

The funds cover the two newly opened calls with a total of 18 topics  for sustainable energy projects under Horizon Europe Cluster 5 aligned with the EU’s broader energy and climate policy objectives:

  • Destination 3 – Sustainable, Secure, and Competitive Energy Supply with a 138.6 million EUR total budget (HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02): supports projects that aim to accelerate the energy transition to renewable energy sources (wind, solar, and hydrogen), energy storage solutions, smart transport systems as electric vehicles (EVs), alternative fuels, carbon capture technologies, technologies for integrating renewables into grids, while addressing energy security concerns.
  • Destination 4 – Efficient, Sustainable, and Inclusive Energy Use with a 50 million EUR total budget (HORIZON-CL5-2024-D4-02): promoting renewable energy, and integrating digital solutions to manage energy consumption. Specific areas of interest include decarbonization of energy-intensive sectors, smart grid development, and energy-efficient technologies for buildings and industries while ensuring that energy services remain accessible and affordable for all citizens.

Highly competitive

Proposals are due by 4 February 2025.  The evaluation process for these calls is highly competitive, with proposals being reviewed by independent experts. Proposals must clearly demonstrate potential contributions to the EU’s climate and energy objectives, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy security, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
