Circular Bio-based Europe Partnership launches new call

Published on: 2 May 2024 | Last edited on: 3 May 2024

The Circular Bio-based Europe (CBE-JU) Partnership, has published a new call aimed at boosting innovation and development of circular bio-based solutions in Europe. The 18 topics in this call range from valorisation of sustainable oil crops, conversion of biomass into platform chemicals and development of new bio-based products including building materials.

Bioeconomy crucial for tackling environmental challenges

The bioeconomy plays a key role in the sustainable production of renewable biological resources. In the bioeconomy, renewable biological resources, together with their associated co-products and by-products, have the potential to replace existing, non-renewable sources of raw materials for fuel, energy and production. A key development, therefore, in the global transition to sustainability and addressing environmental challenges.

CBE-JU published new call

On April 24, the Circular Bio-based Europe (CBE-JU) Partnership announced a new call, aimed at boosting innovation and the development of circular bio-based solutions in Europe. These calls seek to accelerate the market deployment of such solutions while ensuring their environmental sustainability. Funding will be allocated to projects in research, demonstration, and industrial deployment, ensuring collaboration across various stakeholders in Europe’s bio-based value chains. The budget for these calls comes from Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation funding program. Public funding will have to be complemented by private investments.

18 topics with a 213 million euro budget

The 2024 call for proposals outlines 18 topics with a budget of 213 million euro, focusing on advancing Europe’s competitive circular bioeconomy. Topics include valorization of sustainable oil crops, conversion of biomass into platform chemicals, and development of bio-based construction materials, among others. The 18 topics are:

  • Bio-based value chains for valorization of sustainable oil crops (budget 20 million euro)
  • Bio-based dedicated platform chemicals via cost-effective, sustainable and resource-efficient conversion of biomass (20 million euro
  • Bio-based value chains for valorization of sustainable natural fibre feedstock (20 million euro)
  • Bio-based materials and products for biodegradable in soil applications (15 million)
  • Sustainable microalgae as feedstock for innovative, added-value applications (15 million euro)
  • Enlarging the portfolio of commercially produced ‘Safe and Sustainable by design’ (SSbD) solvents (15 million euro)
  • Circular and SSbD bio-based construction & building materials with functional properties (15 million euro)
  • Selective and sustainable (co)-production of lignin-derived aromatics (15 million euro)
  • Innovative bio-based adhesives and binders for circular products meeting market requirements (15 million euro)
  • Innovative conversion of biogenic gaseous carbon into bio-based chemicals, ingredients, materials (15 million euro)
  • Valorization of polluted/contaminated wood from industrial and post-consumer waste streams (7 million euro)
  • Biotech routes to obtain bio-based chemicals/materials replacing animal-derived ones (7 million euro)
  • Sustainable, bio-based alternatives for crop protection (10 million euro)
  • SSbD bio-based coating materials for applications under demanding and/or extreme conditions (7 million euro)
  • Innovative bio-based food/feed ingredients (7 million euro)
  • New forms of cooperation in agriculture and the forest-based sector (4 million euro)
  • Mobilise inclusive participation in bio-based systems and supporting the CBE JU widening strategy and its action plan (3 million euro
  • Supporting the CBE JU Deployment Group on Primary Producers (3 million euro)

The deadline is September 18, 2024.
