Recently, the European Commission announced that Northern lights was awarded a 4 million euro funding under CEF Energy to perform a FEED study for the expansion of their CO2 transport and storage capacity in Norway to over 5 million tonnes per year, to respond to the increasing demand in Europe.
1.037 billion euro for 5 cross-border infrastructure projects
The European Commission will invest 1.037 billion euro in 5 cross-border infrastructure projects under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for trans-European energy networks. CEF will provide financial support to 4 projects for construction and 1 study. This study relates to the Northern Lights project which involves a study of the development of an open and flexible infrastructure that will transport CO2 by ship from capture sites across Europe to a terminal in western Norway for intermediate storage, before transporting it by pipeline for permanent storage in a reservoir under the seabed. This infrastructure will enable the mitigation of industrial process emissions for which there is currently no scalable solution, accelerate the decarbonisation of European industry, and facilitate the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. We are delighted to have supported Northern Lights in both the PCI and the CEF application development.
